Description |
Digital image of the Atkins Children monument, Lot 2339, from a black and white negative taken by Kathleen Fox, circa 1987. Carved in marble by Peter Stephenson (1823-1861). The Atkins monument reflects the sensibility of the many Mount Auburn monuments that celebrate family relationships through figurative sculpture. Stephenson carved the touching portraits of Willie and Charlie with their arms around each other and their sister Mary between them. In a united embrace, the children look toward heaven. The inscription on the stone reads: Their angels do always behold the face of my father which is in heaven." Mary and Williw died within a few days of each other. Their brief lives are recorded on the stone. "Willie, 2 yrs, 7 mos. 14 ds," "Mary, 9 mos, 23 ds," and "Charlie, 2 yrs. 8 mos. 29 ds." |
