Scope & Content |
"Memorial of Subscribers to Story Statue Fund" is a handwritten lists of subscribers and a request on their behalf by Trustee and fellow subscriber Charles P. Curtis, dated April 21st, 1856. The memorial updates the list of subscribers noting "about one third of the contributors have departed this life." Curtis requested that the finished statue be removed to its destination in the Chapel. His terse language seems to indcate disapproval of sculptor William Wetmore Story's tardiness in completing the Story Statue, lamenting that some of his fellow subscribers had died "without witnessing the accomplishment of the object for which their contributions were made by them and accepted by the Trustees of the Cemetery" a decade earlier. The recto of the memorial contains the subscribers' request and partial list of subscribers' signatures: Samuel Atkins Eliot, Ignatius Sargent, Charles P. Curtis, Richard Fletcher, John Amory Lowell, John Appleton, Jacob Bigelow, and William Sturgis. The list resumes on the recto of the second page: Nathaniel Ingersoll Bowditch, John C. Gray, George Tyler Bigelow, William Appleton, Charles Greely Loring, F.C. Loring, and William Gray. The recto also contains another list written later in pencil in a different hand on February 1st, 1868. This list is of "surviving" subscribers and it includes some names not included on the earlier list: Sam May, Augustus Lowell, George Ticknor, James Savage, Josiah Quincy Jr., and David Sears. Monetary contributions from the men are listed to the right of their names woth a total sum of $750. Check marks are also made next to the names in the original list, denoting those who had died. The enclosing page of the two documents contains the title of the Memoriam at top center; it is dated April 21st, 1855, while the subscribers' request on the first page is dated April 21st, 1856. The Story Statue arrived from Rome in the spring of 1855 and it was exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum until it was finally transported to the Chapel in September of 1856. The documents are written on three unlined pages, the original manuscript written in black ink, the later in light pencil. |
