Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter from Trustee Jacob Bigelow to President John T. Bradlee dated October 28th, 1872. Bigelow reported that due to his disinclination to leave his house in the imminent winter months he felt anxious to conclude his official business with the Cemetery with regard to the Sphinx statue and relinquishing his responsibilities as Sphinx Subcommittee member. He had already directed the Secretary to prepare the paperwork to do so. He requested that Bradlee, the only subcommittee member besides Bigelow himself, visit him at his 59 Mount Vernon Street residence in Boston to discuss the matter. Bigelow gave thanks to the Trustees involved in the matter of the Sphinx and alluded to the desire on the part of some of them that his own name should be inscribed onto the Sphinx pedestal. He reiterates that his gratitude for the Union victory as reflected in his donation towards the Sphinx was enough and that the addition of his name would be mere "ostentation". The letter is written in black ink on two lined pages. |
