Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter from Brigadier General (Massachusetts Militia) Henry A.S. Dearborn to Dr. Jacob Bigelow, dated October 25, 1831. Written from his estate in Roxbury, Dearborn wrote that Bigelow's "historical account of Mount Auburn...is lucid, neat & sufficient," and that he liked Bigelow's proposed names of avenues and paths for the Cemetery. He recommended red cedar wood for the guide boards on the walking paths because of the durability of the wood. Dearborn suggested "Indian Path" instead of the proposed "Indian Ridge" and explained that "Indians" knew no other term, that people generally in the U.S. knew Indians traveled on paths, and that Indians especially "sought out" such paths. He expressed no doubt that there was "a real Indian Path on the ridge." The letter is written in black ink on three unlined pages. |
