Folsom, Charles |
Date |

Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter from Superintendent Colonel Charles W. Folsom to President John T. Bradlee dated September 2nd 1871. Folsom reported that he had returned from the stone quarry in Hallowell, Maine where the approximately fifty ton block of granite from which the Sphinx statue would be carved was "split off" and awaiting transport. He drew a diagram describing its shape, measurements, and position. The block would be rolled to a level part of the quarry and then hauled by oxen to town in Hallowell whereby it would proceed by train to Boston. Folsom noted that a train car large enough to carry the block may be difficult to acquire and that Mr, Wilson of the "Granite Co." said his company had never dealt with such a heavy stone and had to order extra equipment. Due to these obstacles Folsom expressed reservations to Bradlee about the timely delivery of the granite block to the cemetery by the end of September. The letter is written on four lined pages in black ink. |
