Three-quarter bound book (10.5" x 8" x 1.5") in dark red leather and black pebble cloth. Title embossed in gold on spine "Mount Auburn Cemetery, Annual Reports,1935 to 1954." The book is comprised of individual booklets bound together to make one volume. Each booklet is an annual report consisting of the annual report of the trustees as well as the annual reports of the treasurer and superintendent. The reports are chronological beginning with "One Hundred and Twenty-Fourth Annual Report" (1955) and ending with "One Hundred Forty-First Annual Report" (1972). The color of each booklet cover changes every year from the 124th Report (1955) through the 131st Report (1962) and are heavy card stock paper; thereafter every cover is an off-white or white color. Most booklet covers have manuscript markings that cross out the year with an ink pen and backdate the title year by one year (assumedly to negate the confusion arising from the report's title year referencing the publication year and not the year of the actual annual report). Light glossy paper is used for the body matter of each booklet. The 124th Report (1955) through 133rd (1964) contain monochrome lithographic illustrations of Washington Tower on the half-title page, color photographic images of the tower are used thereafter. As in the previous volume (1935-1954) full page photographic images (uncredited) are unique to each report and consist of tombs, graves, and landscape features of the cemetery. The transition from black and white photographs to color photographs occurs in the 132nd Report (1963). The 133rd Report (1964) contains an offprint of an article by Donald Wyman "Trees of Mount Auburn" originally included in Horticulture magazine (6/1964). The 140th Report (1971) contains a cemetery map. The 141st Report (1972) contains a cutout heraldric-style shield on the cover page that frames a color photograph of Washington Tower on the title page. This volume spans the presidencies of Oakes I. Ames, Francis B. Richardson, and Alan D, Chesney; it spans the superintendencies of Herbert C. Philpott, Stanley E. Robbins, and Duncan W. Munro. Harold F. Harriman and Newell W. Penniman Jr. were the treasurers respectively. |
