Creator |
Bigelow, Jacob |
Date |
1872 Oct 25 |
Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter from Trustee Jacob Bigelow to President John T. Bradlee dated October 25th, 1872. Bigelow reported that he had learned from Superintendent Colonel Charles W. Folsom that Cemetery trustees wanted to inscribe Bigelow's name "conspicuously" on the Sphinx statue's pedestal. He allowed that his name might be placed in small letters on the side of the pedestal but that any attribution to himself would be "a departure from the object and intention of the monument" and that he had explained this to Folsom. The letter is written in black ink on one lined page, the manuscript on the recto of the folded page; the verso contains a heading in pencil "octo 25", "J. Bigelow". |
