Date |
1843 Sept 14 |
Scope & Content |
Handwritten Trustee Committee Report on bringing water from Fresh Pond written and signed by Chairman Jacob Bigelow on September 14th, 1843. The report is written in black ink on both sides of three unlined pages, the final page contains the title at center top with the date September 27th, 1834. Bigelow reported that surveyor Waldo Higginson found the surface levels of Fresh Pond approximately seven to eight feet higher than water in the Cemetery's meadow and Garden Pond. Bigelow allowed that channeling Fresh Pond's water by steam engine would be astronomically expensive but so would cutting a deep channel under Fresh Pond leading to the Cemetery. He maintained that the project be undertaken considering declining lot space in the future and suggested that the Corporation buy the land between Fresh Pond and the Cemetery. In closing, Bigelow suggested that if the Trustees did not approve channeling water via Fresh Pond that they instead attempt to ascertain the hard depths of the Meadow and Garden Pond and if above sea level to dig a trench to drain those bodies into the Charles River. |
