String-bound booklet (6.5" H x 4.6" L) produced in 1940 of twelve pages titled "Mount Auburn Crematory" printed in black at bottom on cover page. The cover page (page 1) contains a green and black lithographic illustration of the facade of Bigelow Chapel. The booklet is an informational sales brochure intended for cremation customers. The text informs the reader about the historical founding of the Cemetery, its pioneering role in instituting cremation, the construction of Bigelow Chapel's crematory in 1900, a description of the crematory, cremation statistics, the rationale for cremation, the technical process of cremation, cremation memorialization and burial procedures, and legal requirements for cremation. A fragment of a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow adorns the back page. The text states that the booklets were intended to include price lists. Seven booklets and a single blank form "Request for Cremation" are included in the folder referred by this Object ID number. The booklets have white covers (bordering cover image) but one is faded brown, two are ink-stamped "Mount Auburn Cemetery File Copy." |
