Memorandum on Gatekeeper Duties from the Trustee Committee on the Gatekeeper, circa 1840 - 1860. The memorandum is handwritten in black on both sides of a single lined page. It lists the duties of the gatekeeper including the accounting of interments and funeral permits, logging labor hours of the workmen on the grounds, cleaning the entranceway, and providing information to Cemetery visitors. The gatekeeper worked every day sunrise to sunset except for Saturday morning for which he could procure a substitute approved by the Superintendent. The gatekeeper's subservience to the Superintendent is reiterated throughout. The Committee granted an annual salary of $650.00 to the particular gatekeeper alluded to in the memorandum with the stipulation that "he" cease duties as the Cemetery sexton. The memorandum is unsigned and undated. |
