Title |
Letter with envelope from Randolph Rogers to Jacob Bigelow regarding John Adams Statue, May 24th, 1856. |
Date |
1856 May 24 |
Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter from sculptor Randolph Rogers in Rome to President Jacob Bigelow dated May 24th, 1856. Rogers sent Bigelow two photographs of the model of the John Adams statue [photographs not included in catalog entry]. Rogers informed him that he had ordered marble for the statue and would start working on it as soon as his model was dry. Rogers also referred to sending for and receiving his $1500.00 payment from the Cemetery [see 1831.039.005-006]. He closed the letter noting that sculptor Thomas Crawford, also in Rome, had finished the statue of James Otis and would sail for America the next day. The letter is written in black ink on both sides of one page formerly folded in half and then thrice; the verso of front-facing page contains the first part, the recto on the reverse page contains the second. The envelope included in this catalog entry is addressed to Bigelow from Liverpool, England and stamped on June 7th, 1856; its arrival in Boston stamped on June 29th, 1856. It contained the draft notice for $1500.00 sent via Pakenham Hooker & Co. from Rome on May 24th, 1856. A filing title was later added by the Cemetery, written inverted on the verso at left and noting the draft and payment to Rogers. It is probable that the letter described above was sent in the same envelope given the shape of its fold. |
