Letter from Superintendent Charles W. Folsom to President John T. Bradlee, April 9th 1873. |
Creator |
Folsom, C.W. |
Date |
1873 April 09 |
Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter from Superintendent C.W. Folsom to John T. Bradlee dated April 9th, 1873. Folsom reported that the supply of Cemetery guide books kept for sale by Gatekeeper Safford was out of stock and that he'd instructed the latter to enquire about obtaining more. Folsom had included other material in the letter with this document: Safford's letter to the guidebook publishers, a subsequent reply from the same, Folsom's reply to the publishers, and older guide books. Notably, this letter to Bradlee is dated a month after guide book publishers Russell and Richardson had agreed to sell their contract with the Cemetery after complications from the Great Boston Fire of November 9th 1872 had destroyed their remaining inventory of guidebooks (see 2014.020.002-001). It is unknown which Gatekeeper is indicated in this letter. The aforementioned communication with the publishers was with Gatekeeper Truman Safford. This letter is written in blue ink on the recto of one page of unlined Superintendent's stationery. At the bottom, following Folsom's signature he wrote "Per E.T.K.", the meaning of which is undetermined as yet. At top is a note in pencil "Subject: Mt. A Post Office", likely an attempt by a later administrative body to file the document. |
