Scope & Content |
Three-quarter bound book in burgundy leather and black pebble cloth with marbled endpaper. Title embossed in gold on spine "Annual Reports,1871 to 1904, Mt. Auburn Cemetery." Some discoloration is apparent in the inner seam of the book leaves due to the degradation of the binding string. Some pages are tearing away from the binding due to deterioration of the binding glue. The book is comprised of individual booklets bound together to make one volume, the front covers of the booklets were omitted in this volume. Each booklet is an annual report consisting of the annual report of the trustees as well as the annual reports of the treasurer and superintendent. The reports are chronological beginning with the 39th Report (1870) and ending with the 73rd Report (1904). The 39th Report (1870) through the 71st Report (1902) use a variant of blackletter type font on its cover page (originally the title page), thereafter the 72nd and 73rd Reports (1903-1904) change to a more modern serif font. Black and white photographic images are included in the following reports; in the 68th Report (1899): the Administration Building and Story Chapel on frontispiece page; the 72nd Report (1903): the Sphinx on frontispiece page, and statues of John Winthrop, James Otis, John Adams, and Joseph Story throughout; the 73rd Report (1904): the Sphinx on frontispiece page, Story Chapel, Auburn Lake, and Bigelow Chapel throughout. The 69th Report (1900) through the 71st Report (1902) contain a black and white photographic image of Bigelow Chapel on frontispiece page. The 60th Report (1891) contains a foldout map on the frontispiece page "Plan of Mount Auburn Cemetery 1890". This volume spans the presidencies of Jacob Bigelow, John T. Bradlee, Israel M. Spelman respectively. It spans the superintendencies of Charles W. Folsom, James W. Lovering, and James C. Scorgie. Henry B. Mackintosh and John L. Dill were the treasurers for the years 1871 - 1904. |
