Title |
Trustee Committee Report on Introducing Water to Mount Auburn and other Objects, September, 1843 c. |
Creator |
Mount Auburn Cemetery |
Date |
1843 Sept c |
Scope & Content |
Handwritten Trustee Committee Report "on introducing of water to Mount Auburn and other objects"; it is written in black ink on both sides of four unlined pages and includes an enclosing page containing the title of the report as well as a "probable" date of September 16th, 1834, and reference to Trustees Records Volume 1, page 97, written by another hand post facto. The report is unsigned and undated. The content refers to the earlier Trustee Committee Report on Introducing Water from Fresh Pond authored by Committee Chair Jacob Bigelow on September 14th, 1834 (see accession #1831.034.008). The report reiterates the original aims of the Corporation and lists the capital projects deemed necessary with cost estimates: erecting a stone or iron fence on the Mount Auburn Street side of the Cemetery, planting a hedge fence on the remaining three sides of the Cemetery, introducing fresh water to the Cemetery via Fresh Pond and draining to the Charles River, erecting a chapel, erecting an observatory or tower on Mount Auburn, and draining the lowlands. The author also suggested the Corporation set a limit of $3000.00 at a time for capital projects "before new funds accrue". This report is very similar to the report written by Joseph Story (see 1831.034.009) in detail and intent but it is written in another hand. |
