Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter from C.H. Clary of Hallowell Granite Company to Superintendent Colonel Charles W. Folsom dated December 20th 1871. Clary was Secretary of Hallowell Granite Company in Maine. He wrote to Folsom about their progress and diffficulties of transporting the fifty ton block of granite from which the Sphinx statue would be carved. Hallowell Granite had waited for snow to fall so that they might more easily tow the stone from their quarry to the train depot in Hallowell. They hauled the stone no more than a mile before it slid down a hill that halted their progress for the day. Clary stated that he did not know exactly when the stone would arrive at the Cemetery but that he expected a train car to be ready for transport to Boston by the time they got the stone to Hallowell's depot. The letter is written on Hallowell Granite Company stationery, on both sides of a single sheet of lined paper with the company letterhead. |
