Scope & Content |
Handwritten letter from trustee Dr. Jacob Bigelow to President Joseph Story dated September 17th, 1843. Bigelow proposed to spend the Cemetery's budget surplus of $26,000 on six different projects: extension of the iron fence from the main gate along Mount Auburn Street, obtaining fresh water by building ditches and draining the salt marsh into Meadow and Garden Ponds, planting hedges on the "three back sides" of the Cemetery, construction of a "Gothic" chapel, erection of a tower, and planting more trees along the paths. Bigelow also suggested a reserve fund of $2000 to apply to the projects in case of cost overruns. The letter is written in black ink on three leaves of a single fastened unlined sheet. On page three he drew a small sketch of the chapel plan and mentioned possible locations for it. At center of the fourth leaf is the address, " Hon. Story, Cambridge. Mass". |
