Postcard of the Lion Monument in Lucerne, Switzerland. Polychrome collotype print of the Lion Monument sculpture designed by Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1884) depicting a dying lion laying down in a cave niche, right paw on on a shield and left paw overhanging the edge of the niche. Sculpture is reflected in water below. The latin inscription HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI is engraved above the niche, translated it means "To the loyalty and bravery of the Swiss". The monument is a memorial to the Swiss Guards massacred by revolutionaries in 1792 during the French Revolution. Printed title in red on bottom left "Luzern Lowendenkmal [Lowendenkmal is German for "Lion Monument"]. Verso: no manuscript, no postmark, no stamp, publication statement printed vertically on left "E. Goetz. Phot.,Luzern. 2687". |
